in a way it's a bit like food, sure, vanilla root beer floats (ErrorInk) may also be my favorite of all time, but some days it gets tiring and sometimes you may want to go for a vanilla orange soda float (Drink) or sometimes I want to try something completely new and that's a-okay!

Black Character Design Poll: Event Rules

I am an avid lover of graphs. I like numbers, I like trends and the absence thereof. I like the mindsets that make people make decisions, I like recognizing the biases, both conscious and unconscious, in sampled populations. I like how you'll always gain some sort of answer, even if it's not the one you expected (it's the scientist in me)! Best of all, I like making people question themselves! So... Why not a poll?

This is going to be a TWO-PART event. The first portion is going to ask the First Question, starting Sunday April 13th and I will stop taking submissions Saturday April 19th. The second portion is going to ask the Second Question, starting Sunday April 20th, and I will stop taking submissions Saturday April 26th.

The goal is:

To see how different groups feel about the same character design, specifically Black audiences

To make participants question how and why their own beliefs may be affected

When I tell you "consider your Black audience when you create Black characters", that's not me pointing you to an amorphous concept- I'm talking about real people who are looking at a work! And very often, we find out that a creator's intent, versus a particular audience's perception, are not on the same page. That's not always a bad thing, nor something we can always control. But sometimes, it can reveal some lack of understanding, or biases we aren't aware of. So let's test that out! Let's have that conversation!

Submissions:

You will be submitting characters! There are three things requested in an ASK format:

A good, clear picture of Black Character from the Source Material

Black Character's Name

Title of Black Character's Source Material

DASSIT! No, I don't want leading arguments or why you love them in the ask. I will delete it. Let people make their own conclusions!

Responses:

Your options will be "Peak", "Mid", and "Nah".

Answer honestly and instinctively! If you thought it was great, choose that! If you thought it was ass, choose that! Don't let a need to "look nonproblematic" or "to be nice" affect your answer. Just take the time to consider why your opinion may be different from others. This is an opportunity to consider something new!

That being said! I'm not arguing or doing discourse with y'all in the comments or tags- I'd have to keep up with far too many conversations. Think before you speak! That thought that you think might be racist- you do not have to say it!

I will be organizing responses into three groups of viewers: "White", "Nonblack POC", and "Black". One, so that the Black voters have a little more chance to be seen (and we're not like, 97-3 every time 😅) and two, because sometimes I think people of color assume they are immune to antiblackness. I want everybody to think!

Do not send me an ask or message telling me why you're uncomfortable and why you think I shouldn't ask these questions. It's meant to bring people out of their comfort zone. Considering that you may have a different perspective on the presentation of Blackness than an actual Black person is not a bad thing, and no, it's not causing racism to have a conversation about why that may be an issue. Just don't participate.

Because that's just it, isn't it? He became a heart surgeon because of that core- because of that shrapnel that everyone always knew remained buried in your chest. God forbid that day ever have to come, but if it did- Zayne's one wish was to be the one with bloodied baby blue gloves and glasses fogging from the heavy breath in his mask as he toiled over your body for hours upon hours, willing you to be alive again with every single movement.

And that was just an extreme case, an example born of the worst case scenario. Anyone would choose to save a friend or family member- hell, even a stranger in certain cases- if they had the power to. It just meant they were good and decent, but nothing extraordinarily so. Which is why when he offers you a ride off of the side of the street, on your way to your destination or to the subway system to get home that way, you always seeming to take it. Your feet were hurting- that chronic injury was acting up again, you just didn't feel like walking- whatever your reason, he was there.

In every forgotten lunch bought on his dime, every cupcake on a rainy day or afternoon after your night of bad dreams, every hand over cupboard corner to stop your head, every hand hold whenever someone insidious walked by with a disgusting quip at the edge of their tongue- every moment he spent after an overtime shift on the phone with you after a particularly bad night-...

Yes, in everything he did.

i actually had thought of something similar to your uber nonproblematic sammick concept... but it was part of a 'mr and mrs smith' au where they had married to maintain a cover but didn't realize the other was also an assassin (although sammie was really just helping out his cousins w their jobs). and then their respective rival orgs gave them each other as a target. cue them trying to kill each other while also having the nastiest freakiest sex covered in blood -- remmick just brutally taking what he wants from sammie while mockingly crooning his tame vows from their wedding, sammie deliberately rousing remmick's jealousy by telling him sammie was usually the honeypot on assignments so he'll be rougher

I wanna talk about rape/SA in Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint err so that's what this post is about!

cw: discussion of rape depiction in media ( it's exactly as graphic as orv makes it so if you read it and were fine this post is probably okay too) ; also various homophobic/transphobic/misogynistic tropes related to SA. let's fucking go

rape is referenced in orv shockingly often early on.

1. there is the jung heewon backstory - the most neutral and nonproblematic of the depictions of SA but its still pretty.... It's certainly a choice to make your female character's whole premise be "ordinary" gangrape victim (picked up and carried to safety by our Male Protagonist of course) growing into an empowered and strong and badass sword woman with a strong sense of injustice who uses her powers and experience to kill all evil abusers going forward. classic weak-to-strong storyline. "crouching figure" evolves into "judge of evil".

making your female character go through rape AS the start of her arc will always be a tough premise that could be easy to fuck up and make offensive, but it's not like you CAN'T write a story like that and have it still be good. aside from a couple of things, I feel like her character was handled respectfully overall in regards to the rape backstory, perhaps because it's non explicit and basically never brought up again later. mostly approved👍 7.5/10

2. then there's the human slave farms/forced gangrape and murder livestreaming operations, one of which Kim Dokja's old buddy from Minosoft ran (lol) and Han Sooyoung ends up in. her clothes are ripped to the point her underwear is exposed (which is Sexual Assault obviously) and the threat of imminent rape is explicit. once again kim dokja shows up and rescues her heroically, but this moment is subverted when we learn she was just pretending to be unconscious in preparation to strike and kill and everyone so didn't "need" rescuing at all. I guess there's technically nothing to criticize here, its just weirdly more explicit than jung heewon's assault and feels more unnecessary and random. 5/10

3. there is Nirvana who plays into the tired old tropes of Gender Ambiguous/crossdressing men are Crazy Sexual Predators AND Homosexuals are Preying On Straight Men. sigh. These are really bigoted and untrue homophobic ideas that have been used in media to spread bigotry for decades. including a caricature of a queer person like this so thoughtlessly and uncritically sucks and actively harms the queer community bc homophobes STILL use these same long disproven talking points to discriminate against transgender women and drag queens.

especially for a work that is so concerned with deconstructing tropes and storytelling and what it means to write fiction and how it affects reality, they should really know better. ESPECIALLY if the authors plan to gain most of their profit from their overwhelmingly young queer readers that they gained by doing agressive queerbaiting (dont argue you know its true), its just the bare minimum to think it through if youre not playing into really old homophobic shit. anyway.

this particular example is really annoying because I would LOVE nirvana's character otherwise, but this really ruins him and leaves the story A HUNDERED TIMES WORSE OFF wjy did tjey have to write him like this UGH -1000/10. explode

in summary its a really mixed bag of depictions, some worse and some better. there's actually way more examples I want to talk about but that's gonna go in part two of this post eventually

he cares to some extent but he doesnt really know that he should care more about them. im sure he wishes well for them, and if oceanclan was like "hey treeclan can you send some volunteers so we can beat up firespots" or something, he would show up for his family. but there's not a lot of emotional investment yeah, he barely knows who they are and doesn't make an effort to fix that

sandywing doesnt care because in her eyes what he's doing is nonproblematic. but lets say, if he wanted the kids to come visit him on the weekends, that might be problematic because oh no what if they talk to someone and get ideas put in their head. sandywing likes (the illusion of) having total control and not sharing custody so silverstone being a deadbeat is perfect for her

Not just modern tumblr issue. I remember around ten years ago, I follow a blog that list "Vanilla BL with nonproblematic content" (idk if problematic was an accurate word) and it was one of the blogs I used if I want to read fluff. im late to the party but i just wanted to say that i came across your lucifer fic, take two and leave a voicemail!, and it was i think one of the best HH fic ive read so far, like it might be one of my favorite fics full stop. I read your other lucifer fics as well because you just get him and his voice so right!!! ive started reading once bitten back for more (not up to date yet!) and ive been really enjoying that too and it had me wondering, do you think youll ever have any dead-doving in store for lucifer ;p ? or really, any more lucifer fics! though i cant complain, ive still got so much more radiostatic to read, lucifer is just my bias ;-) anyway wanted to thank you for writing so much and of such good quality, its very inspirational. hope youre having a nice day!

Thank you so much! I REALLY enjoyed writing that fic and it's one of the pieces of my own work that I've gone back to reread a couple of times, so it makes me really happy that you enjoyed it!

I do have more Lucifer fics in the works (active WIPs include a 4+1 fic of him taking care of the hotel's sinners and vice versa, and then maybe an Angel/Lucifer sequel), though none are dead dove unless the, uh, wing removal fic percolating in the back of my mind grows more motivation, haha.

To be perfectly honest, I love Lucifer a LOT as a character and I enjoy writing his POV immensely, but I haven't been writing him anymore recently because 1) got bitten very aggressively by the radiostatic bug and 2) I.......... need to get over myself about some aspects of fandom having put me off his character jdjsjhd.

Mild salt ahead: There's just so much radioapple absolutely everywhere, and while I'm not actually opposed to the ship itself (I reblog it plenty and read it sometimes, I'm just picky), I don't vibe very well with the characterization it tends to give both Lucifer and Alastor specifically when it's being used as the "this is the nonproblematic Hot Men" ship, especially in combination with frequently questionable portrayals of Alastor's orientation. Also, it's kind of annoying to be a fan of radiostatic and staticmoth and see those two ships tagged in so many works where radioapple is the actual ship of focus. This isn't a problem with the ship itself, but it's just kinda what happens when a ship is THE most popular ship in a massive fandom.

Anyway, hopefully once I finish Once Bitten, Back For More then I'll dig up my enthusiasm for Lucifer again and knock out that 4+1 fic, hahaha!
